School-Wide Positive Behavior System
In the past, BMES participated in a school-wide positive behavior system to track behavior. This year there is not a requirement to use a color to represent your child’s behavior performance. The PAWS expectations remain: Be Prepared, Be Accepting, Be Wise, Be Safe. Each classroom will decide how to best track and communicate behavior performance to parents.

This year, Ms. Greene’s class is using a different classroom management tool called ClassDojo. ClassDojo is a web based program which allows teachers to track students’ behaviors (positive AND negative) easily and efficiently. The program is based on points, and students can be given positive points for things like being on task, being respectful, participating, or working hard. On the other hand, points can be taken away if students are off task, talking out, or unprepared.

Lunch and Special Areas:
Lunch: 11:47-12:17pm
Specials: 2:40-3:25am

Second grade teachers will send home a weekly reading comprehension practice sheet every Monday. Students will gain practice doing repeated readings of a grade level passage and answering questions. The homework sheet will be collected on Fridays.  It is also recommended that students read a self-selected book, such as his or her library books, for a minimum of 20 minutes at least 3 times a week as homework. Classwork may be sent home for completion or correction as needed. Taking the time to correct and/or review returned classwork as extra practice could result in deeper understanding of the skill.

Please contact Ms. Greene directly if you would like to send a class treat in to honor of your child’s birthday. If outside party invitations are to be sent home, please make sure there is an invitation included for every child in the class.

 Blue Communication Folder
Each day your child will bring home his or her blue Communication Folder. Notes, important information, and/or classwork/graded work will be placed in the folder on a weekly basis. Please review these items with your child and remove them from the folder. Any notes or money should be sent to school in the folder. It is the child’s responsibility to remove these items and place them in the teacher basket. A monthly communication calendar will be on the back of the blue folder and will include school event dates, assessment dates, and notes from the teacher as needed.

Make-Up Work
If a child is absent one day, he or she will have one day to complete any make-up work. If a child is absent two days, he or she will have two days to finish any make-up work and so on.

 Grade Scale
As in Kindergarten and 1st grade, 2nd grade students are scored using a standards-based report card. The grading scale will consist of BE (below expectations), AE (approaching expectations) and OT (on track).
